When we are trying to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle we often ask the question What is the best diet? Perhaps the question should be rephrased to how do I create and maintain a healthy eating lifestyle? There are 3 important things to keep in mind as we attempt to create a healthy eating lifestyle.
1. Keep it healthy:
Your food choices each day affect your health — how you feel today, tomorrow, and in the future. Healthy eating means eating a variety of foods that give you the nutrients you need to maintain your health, feel good, and have energy. These nutrients include protein, carbohydrates, fat, water, vitamins, and minerals. Nutrition is an important part of a healthy eating lifestyle.
can also positively affect, joint pains and inflammation. A healthy eating lifestyle will go a long way to lowering your blood sugar and allow you to manage and perhaps eliminate diabetes from your life
The Impact of Nutrition on Your Health
Unhealthy eating habits have contributed to the obesity epidemic in the United States: about one-third of U.S. adults (33.8%) are obese and approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese. Even for people with a healthy weight, a poor diet is associated with major health risks that can cause illness and even death. These include heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancer. By making smart food choices, you can help protect yourself from these health problems.
The link between good nutrition and healthy weight reduced chronic disease risk, and overall health is too important to ignore. By taking steps to eat healthily, you’ll be on your way to getting the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy, active, and strong. As with physical activity, making small changes in your diet can go a long way, and it’s easier than you think.
Embrace vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains. Include low-fat dairy products, fish, and poultry. Use herbs, spices, and small amounts of olive oil and the other “healthy fats” to make food tastier, healthier, and more satisfying
2. Forgive yourself
Creating and maintaining a healthy eating lifestyle is a process. You will try some foods that are healthy and the taste does not agree with you. You will experiment with many types of foods as you create your healthy food choices. There will be times during this process when you will reach for foods that are not the best choice for your new lifestyle. It is ok, it does happen, not only to you but to everyone. When that happens, forgive yourself. You remind yourself that this is a process and this is a part of it.
3. Make sure you can maintain the lifestyle
This is a lifestyle, so you will be continuing this for your life. This new eating lifestyle should have flexibility. The flexibility you need will come from having a variety of healthy food options to choose from. If your healthy eating lifestyle provides enough nutrition to keep your body operating at peak performance, then you are a good part of the way to maintaining your new eating habits.
yourself too harshly. Remember this is a process and there will be times when you do have something you feel you shouldn’t. Do not decide that your diet is ruined and proceed to overindulge in unhealthy foods.
Instead of considering the diet ruined, try putting the past behind you and choosing healthy, unprocessed foods the next time. This will help remind you to try to do better when faced with the same challenge again. A few off-plan choices make very little difference in the long run, as long as you balance them with healthy foods.
Remember you cannot solve a problem that took years to create in a month. There are many things that need to be understood in order to rectify the issues. Once we understand what caused the problem we can then address it.
We will address other ways to maintain your new healthy eating lifestyle in future articles. For now, keep these three tips to help you maintain your new healthy eating lifestyle… Bon Appetit..
